The right-handed pitcher spent his entire eight-year big-league career with the Boston Red Sox. In 1942, his second year, he led the American League with 22 victories, 22 complete games, 281 innings pitched and 113 strikeouts. He had a 2.59 earned run average that year. He tailed off to 12-15 in 1943 but led the AL with 20 complete games. Hughson bounced back in 1944 with an 18-5 record and 2.26 ERA. He was 20-11 with a 2.75 ERA as the Red Sod breezed to the 1946 American League pennant. He pitched well in Game 1 of the World Series against St. Louis, giving up seven hits and two runs in eight innings. He got no decision as Boston won 3-2 in 10 innings. He took the loss in Game 4 when he was shelled for five hits and six runs in two innings. He pitched 4 1/3 innings of shutout relief in Game 6, but the Cards won 4-1. He was named to the AL All-Star team in 1942 (he did not play), in 1943 (he gave up two runs in three innings to close the AL's 5-3 win) and in 1944 (he was the losing pitcher as the National League scored four times in the fifth for a 7-1 victory).
