He served as a Member of the Virginia State Legislature from 1788 to 1789, Member of the Kentucky State Legislature from 1793 to 1794, Member of the Kentucky State Senate from 1795 to 1798, and in 1807, and as a Delegate to the Kentucky State Constitutional Convention in 1799. He also served in the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War, and as a General in the United States Army during the War of 1812. Clay County, Kentucky, is named in his memory.
