Lawrence Ray Sanders, 82, 58-year resident of Royal Oak, died Tuesday, July 20, 2004, at Georgian Bloomfield Nursing Home, Bloomfield Hills. He was born Oct. 17, 1921, in Miller Township, Mo.
Mr. Saunders graduated from Berkley High School in 1940. He enlisted in the U.S. Marines in February 1942, and was discharged in February 1946. He served in the South Pacific with honor during World War II.
He attended Ford Motor Co. trade school and moved into aviation mechanics working on Marine Corps fighter planes during the war. He became a master journeyman in the tool-and-die trade and retired in 1986.
He loved his country and traveling with his wife in their recreation vehicle.
He is survived by his wife, Dillie Pauline Weddle, whom he married Dec. 29, 1945, at Royal Oak Baptist Church; children, Thomas Ray (Amy) of Pittsburgh, Phillip Lawrence of Roseville, Lillian Fay (Salem) Darany of Grosse Ile; and grandchildren, Timothy, Tammy, Joseph, Emily, and Suzanne.
Visitation, noon-9 p.m. Sunday, Sawyer-Fuller Funeral Home, 2125 12 Mile Road, Berkley; in state, 9:30 a.m. Monday until 10:30 a.m. service, Royal Oak Missionary Church, 411 E. 11 Mile, Royal Oak, officiated by the Rev. Scott Miles; burial, White Chapel Memorial Cemetery, Troy; memorials, American Diabetes Foundation, or Royal Oak Missionary Church.
