Gloucester Daily Times (MA) - Monday, April 2, 2012

Deceased Name: Gladys B. Gale, 87

Gladys B. (Burbee) Gale, 87, wife of the late Wetzel L. Gale, of Rockport, passed away on Thursday, March 29, 2012, surrounded by loving family in Rockport, MA.

Born in Springfield, MA on April 22, 1924, she was the daughter of the late Arthur G. Burbee and Leta Gibbs (who died in childbirth), and was lovingly raised by Arthur and Harriet McPherson Burbee.

Mrs. Gale grew up in Townshend, VT, where her family owned the Townshend Furniture Co. and the Windham Lumber Co. She attended Green Mountain College, and in 1945 married Wetzel L. Gale. Vermont was always her true home, and over the years she and her family often returned to vacation at the beloved Townshend house her husband built in 1946, where the two began raising their children. The Burbees and Gales moved to Rockport in 1947, where they bought the "Texas" Smith home on Eden Road. Clearing the surrounding land and building thirteen cottages with Vermont lumber, they opened Rocky Shores Inn & Cottages. With their growing family, Wetzel and Gladys continued to run Rocky Shores until 1980 and their children enjoyed growing up there and helping with the many innkeeping duties. Throughout the years Mrs. Gale continued to spend time in Rockport and also lived in Stuart, FL. She was a loving mother and dear friend to many.

She leaves behind daughters Patricia DeMarco and Jane Elizabeth Gale, daughter Janet O'Donnell and husband Thomas J., son Beau Gale and wife Nikole, all of Rockport, and daughter Priscilla Gale-Gibson and husband E. Clark Gibson, of Stuart, FL. She will be missed by grandchildren Kara DeMarco Dalius, Jeff, Kevin, Brian, and Brooke O'Donnell, Miranda and Shelby Gale, David and Russell Gibson, and Melissa Gale, and six great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by husband Wetzel L. Gale, brothers Russell and Stuart Burbee, and son Jan M. Gale of Greensboro, NC.

ARRANGEMENTS: A graveside service will be held in Bondville, Vermont. In lieu of flowers, gifts can be made to VNA Care Network & Hospice, Development Office, 5 Federal St., Danvers, MA 01923, or the First Baptist Church of Rockport, 4 High St., Rockport, MA 01966, or to the Grace Cottage Foundation, PO Box 1, Townshend, VT 05353.
Arrangements are being conducted by the Burgess & Mackey Funeral Home, 201 Main Street, Rockport.
