He was a catcher for the Chicago Cubs beginning in 1940 to 1948, 1953-1956. He played in the 1945 World Series for the Cubs against the Detroit Tigers. He only appeared in one game of that losing Series with one at-bat and he recorded a strikeout. He made two All-Star appearances as a Cub in 1948 and 1953. He was traded to the Pittsburgh Pirates for the 1949 season and was there until he was traded back to the Cubs in 1952. In his 15 year career, he batted .252 with 52 home runs and 339 runs batted in.
