When Mary Reagan was born on about March 21, 1863, in Claremorris, County Mayo, Ireland, her father, Patrick, was 29 and her mother, Honora, was 23. The records for her birth provide several different years, but a baptismal record for March 21, 1863 in Claremorris Parish seems to suggest 1863 was the correct year. Her parents Patrick and Honora Reagan were both from County Mayo, Ireland where they married and had two children, including Mary and her brother Patrick, before immigrating to Kankakee County, Illinois in the second half of the 1860s. A brother John (1869) and two sisters, Ellen (1870) and Bina (1872), were born in Illinois, and two younger sisters were born after the family moved to Greene County, Iowa in 1874 (Anne was born in January 1878 and Nora was born in August 1879.). Mary's mother Honora died on Feb 10, 1883 when Mary was almost 20.

Mary Reagan married John Conrad Akolt in 1889 in Council Bluffs, Iowa. They had six children during their marriage, including a son John Patrick Akolt and five daughters, Anna Honora Stewart, Ellen (Ella) Nellie Akolt, Mary Louise Loretta Stewart, Grace Sweeney, and Florence Kruse. John Conrad Akolt was a grocer; he and Mary moved to Colorado in the period around the turn of the century. Mary Reagan Akolt died on March 10, 1940, in Denver, Colorado, at the age of 76.
