"RALPH BAKER DEAD AT 78
"Ralph N. Baker, president of the Hedrick Savings Bank and owner of Baker Real Estate, died Wednesday at 2:25 p.m. at St. Joseph Hospital at the age of 78. He had been ill for the last two weeks.
"He served as sheriff of Wapello County from 1929 until 1933. He had made his home at 2001 N. Court and had lived in Wapello County all of his life.
"He was born March 5, 1895, in Chillicothe, to D. W. and Hester Hoover Baker. He was an Army veteran of World War I and a member of the First United Methodist Church, Elks Club, American Legion, Disabled American Veterans, Iowa and American Bankers Associations and the Independent Bankers Association.
"He married Mildred Olson Feb. 6, 1953, in Florida. She survives. Also surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Robert A. Helgerson of Hedrick and Mrs. Ted W. Guest of Kittering, Ohio; one son, Robert K. Baker of Davenport; 13 grandchildren; and one sister, Mrs. Marie McMullin of Granger. He was preceded in death by one brother and one sister.
"The service will be Saturday at 1:30 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church. The Rev. Charles Rinkel will officiate with burial in the Chisman Cemetery. The American Legion will be in charge of a graveside service. The body is at the Jay Funeral Home.
"Honorary pallbearers will be Earl McCoy, Herman Miller, Harry B. Christy, D. B. Arnold, Dr. F. C. Perkins, David Thorne, Walter Johnson, Jay Blackford, Herman Huber, Sam Erhardt and Herman Shaefer.
"A memorial fund has been established payable to the first United Methodist Church."
