US Congressman. He represented Maryland's 5th District in the US House from 1823 to 1825 and from 1833 to 1835, and its 4th District from 1835 until his death. A native of Baltimore, he received a public school education and was initially active as a merchant. During the War of 1812 he served as aide-de-camp to General Samuel Smith in the defense of Baltimore (1814). His first public office was as a member of the State Senate (1821 to 1823). In 1822, when General Smith resigned from the Congress to take a seat in the US Senate, McKim was elected to the fill the vacancy; he was subsequently reelected to a full term and served from 1823 to 1825. An early proponent of the railways, he temporarily left national politics to become a director of the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad Co. (1827 to 1831). McKim's five terms as a Congressman saw him change parties three times (from Republican to Jackson Republican to Jacksonian). He died in Baltimore.
