Obituary:
Jackson Luden Dean, a native of Huntingdon county, died suddenly of a heart attack on Saturday, Sept. 13, 1941, at Fort Ord encampment, near Monterey, California, where he was employed as an electrician. His home was at Covina, California. For seventeen years he had served the city of Covina as engineer for the fire department, resigning only last year to enter defense work. He had finished two important assignments at San Diego and at Douglas aircraft Plants, and had gone recently to work in the installation of electrical equipment at the big encampment of drafted men on Monterey bay. He passed away shortly after he was stricken, before his wife could reach his bedside. J. Luden Dean was a son of the late Watson and Annie (Prough) Dean, of Huntingdon, and was born in Juniata township, Huntingdon county, Pa., Jan 6 1887. He went to California 31 years ago, and during the World war served two years in France. Following the war he spent about a year in his native county, and then went west, where he has since resided. During the war he was a technician and truck-driver with the 23rd engineers. He enlisted at Fort McArthur in San Pedro, Cal., and was discharged at Fort Meade, Maryland. He was under barrage fire during the long offensive in the Meuse-Argonne. He was a member of the American Legion and for many years was active in the Knights of Pythias. He was united in marriage to Miss Anna Gerhard in Long Beach, Cal., in 1928, and to this union there is one daughter, Nancy, aged 12, left with her mother to mourn the passing of the husband and father. Also surviving are four brothers and one sister: Harry Dean, of Pomona, Cal.; L B Dean, of Oregon; Thomas and Clyde A Dean and Mrs Della Briggs, all of Huntingdon. Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon, Sept 17, at Covina, conducted by the Rev H. H. Hocker of Covina Methodist church. Impressive tributes were paid to the deceased by his pastor, and the large concours of friends and comrades were significant of the high esteem in which he was held. Military services were held at the graveside in Oakdale cemetery.
