Beulah LaVernes Erbe, daughter of Ruth (Lee) and Alvin Erbe, was born at the family farm southwest of Bowdle on Sept. 4, 1919. After the untimely death of her father in 1924, Beulah attended country school and later attended school in Bowdle when the family moved to town in 1928. She graduated with the BHS Class of 1936. With a small amount of money from her grandfather, she was able to attend Northern Normal School at Aberdeen and attain her two year teaching certificate. She came back and taught country school southwest of Bowdle, saving enough to be able to return to Northern State Teachers College and obtain her BA degree in secondary education. After graduating from Northern, she taught in surrounding schools at Dupree, Bryant and Miller, where she served as principal. Beulah married Norman C. Schumacher on Oct. 6, 1945, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Aberdeen. They settled southwest of Bowdle on the George Jurgenson farm that Norman had purchased south of Spring Lake. This is where they raised their family and remained the rest of their lives. After teaching, Beulah was active in the community serving as a 4-H leader for the Spring Lake Lads and Lassies over many years. She was a longtime member of the Walco Extension Homemaker's Club in Walworth County, receiving her 50 year membership award at the state convention in 2000. From its inception, she served many years on the Rev. Martin Bieber Library board, helping to develop it as a resource for the whole community. She was a member of St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, the Ladies Aide, and the Lutheran Women's Missionary Society (LWMS). Beulah enjoyed traveling to see her children, LWMS events, and the many bus tours arranged by the S.D. Community and Family Extension Leader's Association. She enjoyed living on the farm in her retirement years and will be remembered by the neighborhood for her "nature walks" around the farm and Spring Lake, even during the winter months.
Beulah was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Norman on July 30, 1991, and son Lance on July 4, 1970.
She is survived by three sons: Dean N. (Carol) Schumacher of Eureka, Craig A. Schumacher of Fairbanks, Alaska, and Owen G. (Debby) Schumacher of Kabul, Afghanistan; one daughter Cloris K. (Leonard) Hopkins of Montrose, Colo.; one brother Eldo "Dick" (Lillie) Erbe of Yuba City, Calif.; and seven grandchildren.
Casketbearers will be Steve Schumacher, Dwayne Lee, and Jerome Stiegelmeier of Bowdle, John Pat Kurle of Stillwater, Minn., Kent Mueller of Britton, and Creighton Miller of Pierre. Ushers will be Perry Hoffman and Leroy Beitelspacher. Miller Funeral Home, Bowdle, is in charge of arrange- ments.
