| Birth: | Apr. 19, 1909 Philadelphia Philadelphia County Pennsylvania, USA | | Death: | Apr. 20, 1991 Abington Montgomery County Pennsylvania, USA | Major League Baseball Player. He began his career as a third baseman with the Boston Braves in 1931, but before his career was over, he was an All-Star pitcher who was named the National League's Most Valuable Player in 1939. Boston sold him to Philadelphia in 1934, and the right-hander pitched in two games for the Phillies that year. He became a starter the following year, but led the league in losses with 21 in 1936. His big break came when he was traded to the Cincinnati Reds for catcher Virgil Davis, pitcher Al Hollingsworth and $50,000 on June 13, 1938. He immediately blossomed, leading the NL with 27 wins, a 2.29 earned run average and 31 complete games in 1939 as the Reds won the pennant. It was no fluke as he led the Reds to a World Series title in 1940 with a league-leading 22 wins, 2.48 ERA and 29 complete games. He pitched two complete games against Detroit in the Series, allowing a total of just eight hits and three runs. In 1944, when he led the league with 23 wins, he pitched a 4-0 one-hitter against Boston on May 14. Connie Ryan's two-out single in the bottom of the eighth deprived him of a perfect game. He was on the NL All-Star team six times and is a member of the Reds' Hall of Fame. He finished with a lifetime record of 198-160, 242 complete games in 398 starts and 42 career shutouts. He succeeded Johnny Neun as Reds manager in mid-1948 and managed the following year, compiling an 81-123 record. (bio by: Ron Coons)
