She was born February 19, 1925 in Quincy, Illinois, the daughter of Walter and Lillie Anna Vahle Henkenmeyer. On December 1, 1943, she married Howard O. Rutledge in St. James Parsonage, Quincy. He survives.
She was a 1942 Quincy High School graduate. She was baptized and confirmed in St. James Evangelical Lutheran Church where she participated in the Altar Guild and Ladies Aid. She was employed at Gardner-Denver Company as a secretary for 5 years. Hazel was a volunteer secretary for Principal Hilmer Buerger at St. James School, where she enjoyed helping with the growth of the special project: the St. James School Library.
Survivors in addition to her husband are a son, Steven Rutledge and his wife Patricia and daughters Kristin and Lauren, Villa Park, CA; sister-in-law, Virginia Garver, Quincy; a nephew, James Heckenkamp, Quincy; a great niece, Dana Dreier and her husband Bryan, Kansas City, MO; a great nephew, Brad Heckenkamp and his wife Melini, Denver, CO; 4 great great nieces, Emily and Hannah Dreier, Kansas City, MO and Diedre and Anna Heckenkamp, Denver, Co She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister Erla Gerding and her husband Jack, and a niece Darlene Heckenkamp.
Funeral Services will be 2:00 pm Tuesday, June 3, 2003 at the Hansen-Spear Funeral Home, Rev. Marlin Rempfer officiating. Burial will be in Greenmount Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5-7 pm Monday at the Hansen-Spear Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be made to St. James Lutheran Church.
