Charles Beckman was born in the Grand Duchy of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach (present day Thuringia, Germany) on December 25, 1850. He and his brothers (William and Augustus) sailed to the United States and landed in Galveston, Texas, right before the start of the American Civil War. Growing up, Charles settled in Galveston where he first worked as a cigar maker and housekeeper. He would eventually meet and marry 20-year-old domestic servant Miss Minnie Paige in 1883; Minnie was born in Berlin, Prussia, and had immigrated to the States in 1872. Charles and Minnie had 3 children, of which only one (Arthur) would survive at childbirth; Arthur Joseph Beckman was born on April 22, 1893, in Galveston. During the marriage, Charles supported his family by working as a carriage driver. In September 1900, Charles, Minnie, and Arthur would live through the deadliest natural disaster in U.S. history when a hurricane (The Great Storm) and its 145 mph winds devastated Galveston by claiming over 8,000 lives, destroying 2,600 buildings, and leaving 10,000 homeless. Twelve years later, at the age of 61, Charles' health turned for the worse. From January 5 through February 24, 1912, Charles went under the direct care of Dr. Fred R. Kruger (M.D.) due to complications with diabetes. On Monday, February 26, 1912, at 1:40 am, Charles succumbed to his illness and passed away at his residence located at 2318 Ave. H, Galveston, Texas. Charles' funeral service took place from his home at 4:00 pm the same day followed by his burial at Lakeview Cemetery in Galveston.
