Louis was born June 25, 1911 in Iowa to Frank and Louisa Boehler.

In 1920, the family was farming in Union township, Harrison County, Iowa. The 1920 US Census lists:
Frank, 59, head, farmer, b. Switzerland
Louisa, 50, wife, b. Switzerland
Elizabeth, 24, daughter, servant for private family, b. IA
John, 19, son, farm laborer home farm, b. IA
Marguerite, 17, daughter, b. IA
August, 15, son, b. IA
Louis, 8, son, b. IA

Louis was able to complete two years of high school before he needed to go to work. From at least 1935 to 1940, he and his wife, Viola lived at 511 West Erie Street, Missouri Valley, Iowa. The 1940 US Census lists:
Louis A., 28, head, appliance salesman, b. IA
Viola N., 28, wife, b. NE

Later, he married Marie, and they are buried side by side in Rose Hill Cemetery.

He was a Mason
