George Cornwell Bench, one of the best known citizens of Skaneateles, and a lifelong resident of this town, died at the family home in this village at 11:30 o'clock Saturday morning, March 4, 1911 in the 51st year of his age. He was taken ill on that Saturday, February 25th, and despite the most careful nursing failed steadily until the end. Mr. Bench was the youngest son of James and Mary Smith Bench of this village and was born March 29, 1860, at the family homestead. Corner of state and West Academy Street. He spent his life in the hardware business in Skaneateles, engaged several years with Bench & Shear, later as a member of the firm of J. Bench & Son, and for the past five years was secretary and treasurer of the Bench Hardware Company. Mr. Bench served one year a 1883-1884, as clerk of Skaneateles Village. He was four years an active and prominent member of the Skaneateles fire Department serving as chief for 10 consecutive years. He was a member of Skaneateles Lodge, No 522, F. & A.M; also Skaneateles Lodge 275, I.O.O.F., and Skaneateles Encampment, No.107, I.O.O.F. Mr. Bench was a man of engaging personality, generous to a fault, endearing himself not alone to his relatives, but to all with whom he came in contact. Always considerate, kindly and courteous, to the highest degree especially to the highest degree, especially in his own home. He was a loving husband, son, and brother, a loyal friend, an agreeable genial acquaintance winning the regard and esteem of all, and his passing always deeply and sincerely mourned by those who knew him and loved him. Mr. Bench was married March 12, 1907, to Miss. Laura Harse of this village, who survives him as also does his aged father, James Bench, and his sister, Miss. Mary A. Bench, in all of whom his death falls with a crushing blow. Funeral services will be held at St. James Church , Wednesday, March 8, at 2:30 p.m. Burial in Lakeview Cemetery with Masonic Lodge.
