In 1953, she and her husband, Alex, were recipients of an award for the “Live at Home” contest in Memphis. During their 50th wedding anniversary celebration in 1979, the Chandler family appeared on the television program “On the Road” with Charles Kuralt. The program applauded the Chandler children for high academic achievements with the support of their parents. In 1979, the couple were invited to the Hampton Institute in Virginia to receive the first award honoring a black family in the initial Hampton Institute National Conference by the Black Family. In 1980, Mrs. Chandler was appointed by the Governor of Mississippi as a delegate to The White House Conference on Families in Minneapolis.
Service will be at 1 p.m. Monday at the New Hebron Baptist Church in Egypt with the Rev. James Chandler officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Westbrooks Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
Survivors include her husband, Alex P. Chandler of the home; two daughters, Bessie C. Beasley and Gloria C. Coleman, both of Kansas City, Kan.; six sons, Dr. Cleveland A. Chandler of Baltimore, Md.; the Rev. Fortson L. Chandler of Pueblo, Colo., Luther A. Chandler of Kansas City, Mo., James P. Chandler of Starkville, Herman F. Chandler of Bloomington, Ill., and Donald A. Chandler of Nashville, Tenn.; three sisters, Estella Mitchell, Louisiana Hamilton and Clyte Fortson; three brothers, James Fortson, John Fortson and Henry Fortson; 34 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren.
