Major League Baseball Player. Born Joseph Martin Napoleon Carlson, he was an outfielder who played in nine games for the Chicago Cubs in 1925 and in 33 in 1926. The left-handed batter hit .371 with three doubles, one triple and three runs batted in when he made his debut. Then he batted .257 in 1926 with three homers and 15 RBIs. He was traded with infielder Maurice "Red" Shannon and cash on June 7, 1926 to the Cleveland Indians for outfielder Riggs Stephenson and infielder Hank Schreiber. Munson never played another big-league game, while Stephenson went on to have the highest lifetime batting average, at .336, in Cubs' history. He had a .287 lifetime average for 42 games. Yet, he was a star in the minor leagues, breaking in under the name Joe Martin in 1918 and 1919. While with Marlin, he led the Texas Association in hitting in 1924 with a .346 average. The following year he paced the New York-Penn League in all the following categories: .400 average, 188 hits, 132 runs scored, 17 triples, 33 homers and 129 RBIs. That performance earned him his shot with the Cubs. From 1927 to 1929, he hit .383, a Western League-leading .385 and .369, all with Tulsa. He retired after the 1932 season and had a .335 lifetime average in the minor leagues with 2,050 hits. (bio by: Ron Coons)
