My ancestor, ELIJAH GARTON (spelled Garten on land records and Garten on his tombstone)was called Captain in a court case dated 24 April 1792 (He may have fought in the Revolutionay War). He was a grantee in a land record dated 1774 in Augusta Co., Virginia, in 1795 in Greenbrier, W. Virginia, & 1804 in Monroe Co., Virginia.
He and his sons migrated to Lawrence Co., Indiana, and he had a small "corn cracker" as early as 1819 near Fayetteville, Indiana.
He married SARAH BOYD, the daughter of WILLIAM & ELIZABETH (McTEER) BOYD on 16 Mar 1782 in Augusta Co., Virginia.
They were the parents of eight known children: WILLIAM G. GARTON (my ancestor), Elijah Garton, James Garten, Nancy Rachel (Garton) Browning, Fannie (Garton) Hackler, Robert Garton, Elizabeth "Betsey" (Garton) Rhodes, and Amy (Garton) Perkins.
This Elijah Garton is a proven Rev War vet service listed as civil service. He served as a juror during the Rev War in Rockingham County VA His brother Uriah Garton served as a private with George Rogers Clark and is also a proven Rev War vet.
