Presidential First Lady. The wife of 6th United States President John Quincy Adams, she was born in London, England to an American father. She was education in a French convent school, met John Quincy Adams while he was a diplomat serving in England and were married three years later at a ceremony in London (her new father-in-law, John Adams, had just started his first year as the 2nd President of the United States). Four years later her husband was called back to America and she saw for the first time the land where she was a citizen, but returned to Europe as her husband had been appointed minister to Russia. When Adams was appointed United States Secretary of State in 1817, they again returned to America, residing in Washington D.C. From age 21 to 42 she suffered seven miscarriages with only four children surviving to adulthood. When Adams was elected President in 1824 she became the First Lady during her husband's single term in office. She was the author of many writings and poems concerning anti-slavery and pro-women views and translated a number of major books from French to English. Along with Dolly Madison, she helped raise funds for the building of the Washington Monument. Louisa Adams was elated when her husband was defeated for a second term in 1828, as she was very unhappy in the role of a politician's wife and expected to return home to New England. John Quincy Adams had other ideas and pursued a post-presidential career with election as a representative to Congress, where he served for seventeen years, which compromised his health. While on the house floor, he was stricken and taken to a nearby room where he passed away. The following year Louisa Adams suffered a stroke and passed the remainder of her time alive in the care of her widowed daughter-in-law, whose husband had committed suicide, in Washington until her death.
