Served in the Coast Guard during World War II. Played a variety of film roles for 20 Century-Fox, including The Cisco Kid, The Legend of Zorro, and conqueror Hernan Cortes in Captain from Castile. In 1953 starred in a 39-week TV espionage series Passport to Danger. Best known as the Joker in 25 episodes of the Batman TV series in the 1960s. In 1986, started playing the recurring role of Peter Stavros on the CBS nighttime soap opera Falcon Crest. A few years prior to his death he hosted American Movie Classics on cable TV.
