Professional Soccer Player and Executive. 1978 FIFA World Cup participant. Defender in the German First Division (Bundesliga) with Schalke 04 from 1969 to 1980 (winning the German Cup in 1972) and Borussia Dortmund from 1980 to 1985, with 48 goals in 453 Bundesliga games played (25th on the all time list). He also played 11 games for Club Brugge in Belgium in 1973 during his suspension from German soccer due to his involvement in the 1971 match-fixing scandal. He also was selected for the German national team 20 times (with one goal) and played all six matches for Germany in the 1978 FIFA World Cup, where they were eliminated in the second group round. After his playing days, he became a soccer executive. He was the General Manager of Schalke 04 in 1987, Borussia Mönchengladbach from 1990 to 1998, and VfB Stuttgart from 2001 to 2002. In 2000, he was selected to Schalke's Team of the Century. He was a panelist on the Germany TV sports show "Viererkette" (2000-2006). In his obituary in the German news magazine Der Spiegel, he was called a "Bundesliga Urgestein" (English: "Bedrock of the German League").
