CENOTAPH. Ernst Thälmann is commemorated in the "Gedenkstätte der Sozialisten" (Memorial to the Socialists) in this cemetery, as are numerous other leaders of the socialist and communist movements in Germany. The memorial was originally erected in 1935 but was destroyed by the National Socialists. The East German government erected the current memorial in 1951. Thälmann died and was cremated at Buchenwald Concentration camp; his wife, Pink Thälmann, is buried in this cemetery.
