John J. Shipe, patriot, passed away June 30, 2014, at age 87. He was born March 12, 1927, in Kansas City, Mo. He was the son of Henry Spillman Shipe, a KCMO police officer, and Ona Colwes. After serving in Army in World War II, he returned to Kansas City to spend his life's work in the defense and space industries. He married Jacqueline Frances McGee in 1947. Jackie and John met in aviation class at Westport High in Kansas City. He was preceded in death by son, Lt. Dwight David Shipe, pilot and Cessna avionics manager; and his wife of 64 years, Jacqueline. He is survived by sons, Douglas V. Shipe (Pamela) of Lenexa, Kan., and Steven A. Shipe (Kanyawan) and grandsons, Nick and Ray of Westminster, Colo. John credits his elementary school teacher, Ms. Bodenhammer, for inspiring him to reach for the stars. He never forgot his roots and the brilliant people he was fortunate to work with. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, July 18, at Englewood Cemetery, Clinton, Mo.
