Dr. William H. "Bill" Graham II, of Brookings, died June 3, 2014, in Grants Pass.
Dr. William H. Graham II, was born Aug. 25, 1923, in Egg Harbor City, New Jersey.
His mother was a registered nurse and his father was a machinist.
He lived in Philadelphia while attending kindergarten to third grade. While attending third grade through high school, Bill lived in Southern New Jersey.
From 1942 to 1946, Bill served in the U.S. Navy as a Radioman First Class, in the United States, England, Egypt, Australia, India and China. He earned a Victory medal.
After attending Walla Walla Community College in the state of Washington and La Sierra University in California for a year each, he went to Atlantic Union College in Massachusetts, where he earned a bachelor of arts degree, and was also president of his graduating class.
Bill applied to Loma Linda University in California, in 1950, and was not accepted. He rode a motorcycle with his buddy to Seattle, where he worked as a chemist G57 for the U.S. Naval Air Station. He then moved to Portland and worked as a chemist for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
He had reapplied to Loma Linda University in 1951 and 1952. The refusal letter he received in 1952, from Registrar Chester Fink, advised him there was no chance of his being accepted in the foreseeable future and he should seek some other line of endeavor.
Early in 1952 while he was at work, Bill received a phone call from Dr. Harold Shryock asking him if he would accept a place in the Freshman Class of 1952 at Atlantic Union College. Later he learned the reason for his sudden change in status. Former student Richard Edison had contracted bulbar polio and died. Edison's father requested that a qualified applicant from his college be allowed to take his place. "A sobering thought — I was that fortunate applicant."
Following graduation from the College of Medical Evangelists of Loma Linda University, Bill interned at White Memorial Hospital in Los Angeles. He performed general practice in Lancaster and the Norwalk area in California. In 1974 he began an anesthesiology residency at University of Southern California (USC) Medical Center and practiced anesthesia in Corona, California, until he retired in 1985.
Bill married Charlotte Caroline Brant July 6, 1947. A son, William Haines Graham III, was born to this union on Aug. 18, 1956.
In 1960, Bill married Gussie Lingerfelt and a daughter, Cynthia Jeanette Graham, was born Aug. 30, 1960, to this union.
In 2000 Bill met Lois Worthington in Crescent City.
Bill's hobbies included amateur radio, (Extra Class License), photography, numismatics, and philatelics.
Survivors include his devoted companion Lois Worthington; son Bill Graham III and his wife Emi and grandson Charles Graham all of Santa Ana, California; daughter Cynthia Graham of Sun City, California; sister Dolly La Rosa of New Jersey; niece Peggy and her husband Don Dean of New York.
A celebration of life will be at 3 p.m. Saturday, July 12, at Chetco Activity Center, 530 Chetco Lane, Brookings.
