A popular businessman in El Dorado, 'L.C.' purchased a small distributorship named Davidson Oil in 1953, founding Baston Oil Company. Most knew him as a quiet, modest and trusting person. He enabled many to begin their own businesses and careers, by providing financing and positions, based on his belief in their abilities rather than skin color or education. He was an avid golfer and horseman. The horses enjoyed his attention during breaks from work because the barn and pasture adjoined his bulk plant and office on North West Avenue.
Lloyd attended Tulsa University in Oklahoma, where he was a member (and lifetime supporter) of the Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity and received a Bachelor Degree in chemical engineering with a minor in mathematics. He came to El Dorado during World War II, assigned by the military to make aviation fuel. He successfully developed anti-icing fuel additives for high-altitude flight, at Root Refinery (later American Oil Company, or AmOCo). He was a twin-engine instrument-rated pilot.
Baston was "Mr. Phillips 66" to most of south Arkansas throughout the 1960s, '70s and '80s, supplying fuel, lubricants and accessories to many airports, stations and country stores from west of Magnolia all the way to the Mississippi River, and the area north of Fordyce down to the Louisiana line.
