James Greene Coats was the son of James Greene Coats Sr. and Eddie Frances Geiger. His parents were married April 30, 1909 in Fort Pierce, Florida.

James' mother died in 1913 and his father remarried, this time to Florence Geiger, James' maiden aunt. He had two half-brothers by this marriage, Sidney Geiger Coats and Francis Maurice Coats. James Coats, Sr. died in St. Lucie County in 1947.

James married Kathleen V Williamson January 13, 1940 in Okeechobee County, Florida. The newlyweds were living in Fort Pierce at the time of the 1940 census. James was employed as a truck driver for his father's transfer company and gave Quantico, Virginia as his residence in 1935 when he was in the Marines. On the 1945 Florida State Census the couple were still living in Fort Pierce. James stated that he traveled for business and had three years of college. The 1945 Fort Pierce directory listed the name of the family business as Coats Transfer Company. The 1947 directory listed the business as Coats Trucking Company. Kathleene gave Florida as her birth state and said she had completed high school. They had five children, James G Coats III, Nancy, John, Thomas, and Raymond.

James was survived by his wife as she made an application for a military headstone.

James served in The US Marine Corps. He enlisted August 6, 1934 and was honorably discharged on March 23, 1938.
