Merle D. Erickson, 91, of Lake Ann, formerly of Manistee died unexpectedly Friday, July 4, 2014 at West Shore Medical Center. He was born January 20, 1923 in Manistee, the son of the late Wilbur and Anna (Munson) Erickson. He married Audrey Engelmann on November 20, 1946. He graduated from Manistee High School - Class of 1940. He was a veteran of the US Navy during World War II, serving as a radioman aboard a liberty ship in the Pacific. He was retired from Western Union. He loved trout fishing, dancing, playing cards, doing crafts, and enjoying his family. He was good hearted and caring and loved helping others. He was a former member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, where he had been actively involved, including serving on the Parish Council, being the church's secretary, treasurer and custodian. Merle is survived by his wife Audrey, by his daughters, Sharon (Jon) Jensen of Manistee and Brenda (Ray) Gorczyca of Jackson; by his grandchildren, Jon Jensen, Jr., Ben and Molly Gorczyca and Trista Erickson and by his great grandchildren, Elizabeth and Jon Farris Jensen. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his son Randy in 1973. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, July 9th at 11:00 a.m. at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church with Rev. Philip Nordstrand officiating. Burial will be in the Trinity Lutheran Cemetery. Military graveside services will be conducted by VFW Walsh Post 4499 ritual squad. The family will be at the Johnson Funeral Home to receive friends on Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. and for one hour prior to the service.
