David H. Smith was born in Edgefield District, South Carolina to David Madison Smith who was the son of Benjamin F. & Unity Smith and grandson of William & Francis Smith.
William Smith was a revolutionary war veteran, David Madison Smith and David H. Smith was civil war veterans.
On 10 Feburary 1852 David H. Smith with his father David Madison Smith along with family crossed the Ogeechee River for Emanuel County, GA.
David H. Smith married Mary Ann Abiella Hooks on 30 September 1860.
Then enlisted as a Private on 04 March 1862 at the age of 19 in Company H, 48th Infantry Regiment Georgia. He was Wounded on 30 August 1864 at 2nd Manassas, VA in the right hand & left foot. POW on 03 April 1865 at Richmond, VA. DIscharged on 21 April 1865 at Libby Prison, Richmond, VA (Sent to provost marshal). Hospitalized on 28 May 1865 at Jackson Hospital, Richmond, VA.
David had 13 children, was a farmer and a Justice of the Peace.
