Joseph's father, James Persinger changed the family's last name from Persinger to Hardy and moved them all from Cross Plains, Ripley County, Indiana to Texas after 17 Sep 1837.

Joseph Lane Persinger Hardy was born in the Republic of Texas. All of his legitimate female descendants are eligible to join the Daughters of the Republic of Texas.

Joseph and four of his six brothers (Kenneth, James, Johnson, and Theophilus) fought in the Civil War.

Joseph married 1) Martha A. Langford on 23 Oct 1866 in Newton County, Texas, then 2) Alice Sallie Hilliard about 1898.
