Governor of Vermont. He graduated from Barton Academy in 1917 and served in the Army during World War I. He graduated from Syracuse University in 1921 and George Washington University Law School in 1926. Emerson practiced law in Barton and served in several local offices, including 48 years as Town Meeting Moderator. A Republican, he was Orleans County State's Attorney from 1933 to 1937. He was a member of the Vermont House of Representatives from 1939 to 1943, serving as Speaker in his final term. He then moved to the Vermont Senate, where he served from 1943 to 1945 and was President Pro Tem. Emerson served as Lieutenant Governor from 1945 to 1947. He was elected Governor in 1950 and served two terms, 1951 to 1955. As Governor he played a role in "The Novikoff Affair," in which a tenured University of Vermont Professor was dismissed for alleged Communist sympathies that were never substantiated. After serving as Governor Emerson returned to practicing law and was an unsuccessful candidate for the Republican nomination for the US Senate in 1958 and the US House in 1960. (bio by: Bill McKern)
