Born and raised in Philadelphia, he graduated from Yale in 1896 and worked as an electrical engineer. After his father's death, he served as president of Greenmount Cemetery (founded by his grandfather). He met his second wife in August 1937 when both were travelling home from Europe on board the Aquitania; the two subsequently divided their time between his home in Ardmore and hers in Atlanta, where he died. The only one of his siblings to marry, he had no children.
