He served in the Civil War from 1862 to 1865. He was commissioned second lieutenant in the Nineteenth United States Colored Troops. Later he was appointed as a ordinance officer and assistant provost marshal. In 1887, he was appointed by President Grant as the first US District Attorney for the State of Colorado.
