Conductor. A specialist in Germanic music, he shall be remembered for his 40 years on the podium of the Vienna State Opera (VSO). Raised in what was then Yugoslavia, he trained at the Salzburg Mozarteum under Maestro Clemens Kraus then from 1943 thru 1951 refined his art at the Croatian National Theatre of Zagreb. In 1953 Klobucar conducted the first of his more than 1,100 VSO performances, and though the Austrian capital was to remain his base, he had significant extended engagements in several major venues; he was principal conductor at Graz thru the 1960s, at the Royal Swedish Opera from 1972 until 1981, and with the Nice Philharmonic during the late 1980s. From 1964 thru 1969 he led acclaimed Bayreuth Festspielhaus performances of most of Wagner's major works including the "Ring Cycle", "Tannhauser", "Die Meistersinger", "Lohengrin", and "Tristan und Isolde". Though his career was mostly confined to Europe, he did appear at the Metropolitan Opera 21 times in 1968, bowing on January 13th and during his time in New York presenting "The Flying Dutchman" and "Die Walkure". Following his 1993 retirement he remained in his adopted Vienna; at his death from the infirmities of age a portion of his recorded legacy remained available on CD.
