The many friends of Mrs. George Smothers were shocked to learn of her death which occurred Sunday evening at the home of her mother, Mrs. Spellman, in Spring Valley. She had been in Rochester for four months where she underwent an operation for goiter. Two weeks ago she went to the home of her mother and expected to return to her home in Austin with Mr. Smothers who went to Spring Valley Saturday. She leaves besides her husband two small children, aged six and three years. The funeral was held at Spring Valley Tuesday morning.

Catherine, also spelled "Katherine" was the daughter of Patrick and Anna (Quinn) Spellman.
"Katie" as she was lovingly called by her family was the sister of Martin, John, Mary (Mrs. John Jennings), Sarah (Mrs. William Bagan), Michael, Patrick, and Nora (Mrs. Jacob Ott).

She married George Arthur Smothers October 26, 1910 at St. Bridget's Catholic Church, Simpson, Olmsted Co. Minnesota.

Catherine was the mother of 2 young children when she passed away, Ann Josephine "Jo" (later known as Mrs. Rufus Wm. McAlister), and George Richard "Dick" Smothers.

Catherine's husband George Smothers, for reasons known only to himself, had Catherine interred in an unmarked grave somewhere in or near Fillmore County Minnesota.
Despite years of searching, no one has been able to locate her final resting place.
It is the dream of Catherine's family to someday find her and be able to place a marker at her grave site.
