He is the son of Henry Cordes Brown and Jane C. Thompson Brown. He married Mary A. Clark and they had a daughter named Dorothy. In 1881, he practiced before the Supreme Court of the United States. A suit brought by his father against the state of Colorado, to recover land donated for the state capital site.
