Bob left Wellington, TX after the sixth grade to follow the wheat harvest working with his family. In 1941, he was united in marriage to Bertha Sparks. Following the birth of his oldest daughter, they moved to Springfield, CO, where he farmed before being called into the Army near the end of World War II. He served just over a year, and after his release he continued farming for a short time.
He and Bertha moved to Pueblo where he worked at the Army Depot. In the early 1950's, they moved to Canon City where Bob worked at various service stations. Their daughters remained with their maternal grandparents until 1955. Bob became manager of the Chevron Service Station in Canon City, and continued there for twenty years. He then became the Colorado Springs Gazette Telegraph Distributor in Canon City, and received several Carrier of the Month awards.
When Bob suffered a stroke in 2007, and when he was unable to stay by himself he entered the Bruce McCandless State Veterans Home in Florence. He was very content living there and made many friends while there.
He loved spending time with his grandson, Bob and his wife Laura, as well as the rest of his family that would visit at birthdays, Easter, Christmas, and other holidays. He will be sadly missed by his family.
Mr. Fike is survived by his daughters, Dorwinia "Dory" Hopkins of Canon City, Clara Luthi of Forney, TX, and Katherine (Ron) Degler of Lone Tree, CO; brother, Raymond (Shirley) Fike of Wellington, TX; sister-in-law, Treva Fike of Amarillo, TX; 12 grandchildren; 23 great grandchildren; 3 great-great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
