O. Wendell Walden of Barrington since 1974 Funeral services for Mr. O. Wendell Walden, 78, will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, at the Davenport Family Funeral Home, 149 W. Main St. (Lake-Cook Road), Barrington. The Rev. Ann Spurgeon will officiate. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Barrington. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, at the funeral home. Born Aug. 8, 1927, in Dewitt County, Ill., he passed away Saturday, Feb. 4, 2006, at Good Shepherd Hospital, Barrington. Mr. Walden was a graduate of Illinois State University with a Bachelor of Science and a Master's degree in education. He enlisted in the Army in 1950, graduated from Officer Candidate School in 1952, and was commissioned a Second Lieutenant. He served as a helicopter pilot in the Korean War. He was discharged in 1954 and joined the Illinois Army National Guard and retired in 1982 as a Brigadier General. In his civilian career, he was a school administrator at Joliet High School and Joliet Junior College, School District 45 in Villa Park, School District 87 in Bloomington, Barrington District 220 and the high school district in Evergreen Park, until his retirement in 1987. Mr. Walden was a member of the Salem United Methodist Church in Barrington; the Medinah Shrine of Chicago; Monitor Lounsbury Masonic Lodge #522; a member of Scottish Rite Masonic Lodge Council Chapter Valley of Bloomington, Ill., Consistory. He also was a member of Barrington VFW Post #7706, the American Legion in Farmer City, Ill., the Reserve Office Association of the United States and the Army Aviation Association of America, and held memberships in the Barrington Kiwanis Club, the Cook County Farm Bureau and the Illinois Association of School Business Officials. Survivors include his wife, L. June (nee Dickson), whom he married June 16, 1957; children, Joe Walden of Dublin, Ohio, John (Peggy) Walden of Edina, Minn., Julie (Roy) Schwarzenberg of Frederick, Md., and Jeff Walden of Barrington; grandchildren, Dan , Tim, Charlie, Jack and Luke Walden, and Nicholas and Emily Schwarzenberg; a sister, Helen (Mel) Gronewold of Golden, Ill.; brothers, Smith Walden of Wapella, Ill., and James Walden of Lincoln, Ill.; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Oliver Carl and Winifred (nee Phares) Walden; and a sister-in-law, Maxine Walden. Memorials may be made to Salem United Methodist Church, 115 W. Lincoln Ave., Barrington, IL 60010 or to a charity of one's choice.
