George R. Tate, a 59-years resident of Stevens County, went home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on June 9, 2014, at the age of 89. George was born on October 9, 1924, in Kennefic, OK, the son of George R. and Elisa Ann (Smith) Tate.
George was raised and attended school in Oklahoma, and then attended a pattern-making and upholstery trade school. On October 3, 1944, George married Toney M. Pettett. Together they moved to Richland, WA where George worked at the newly opened Hanford Nuclear Reservation, where he also apprenticed as a carpenter. During the next several years, George and Toney welcomed three sons into their family: Grady G., Daron D., and Kenneth K. In 1955 they moved their young family to a farm on Kelly Hill near Barstow, WA where they raised cattle and wheat for two years before relocating to a ranch in Rice, WA. There they were actively involved with the Rice Community Church. In 1975, they moved into Colville, where they have resided since.
George was a man of great faith who enjoyed the opportunity to serve, including a short-term mission trip to the Philippines with a Christian medical and building team. He was careful to raise his boys with a solid faith and salvation foundation. He enjoyed reading in the evenings, caring for his vegetable garden, and, on a rare occasion, George would take time off. His vacations were often taken to visit family in Oklahoma, California and elsewhere in Washington. Designing and building was also a passion of George's. He held a patent for farm equipment and built a three bedroom home on the first place they owned, 40 acres in Finley. He also remodeled many houses before building the Wynne Street Apartments in Colville.
George was preceded in death by an infant son, Kenneth Tate, and three siblings, Pauline, Wadus, and Geraldine.
He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Toney Tate, at the home; sons, Grady Tate and his wife, Imelda, of Colville, WA, and Daron Tate and his wife, Cindy, of Colville, WA; five grandchildren, Cassandra Tate, Krystal Tate, Tronalie Draft, Heather Tate, and Steven Tate; three great-grandchildren, Eleanor, Morgan, and Benaiah; one brother, Joel C. Tate and his wife, Janice, of Yakima, WA; sisters, Patricia McFarlin and her husband, Denton, of Spokane, WA, and Donis Lolkema and her husband, Conrad, of Lynden, WA; and numerous nieces and nephews.
The funeral service for Mr. George R. Tate will begin at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, June 14, 2014, at the First Baptist Church, located at 915 S. Cedar, Colville, WA.
