Mr. Donald Howell Abernathy, Sr. age 86, of Stoners Chapel Road, Adairsville, died Monday morning (June 2, 2014) at Cartersville Medical Center.

He was born in Bartow County, November 27, 1927, son of the late Elihue Richard Abernathy and Naomi Howell Abernathy. He was a member of Stoner Chapel Baptist Church and also a deacon. Mr. Abernathy had retired from Lockheed Martin and was a lifelong cattle farmer. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, traveling, and being with his family.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Bonnie Louise Abernathy in 2005; and a sister, Rachel Hill in 2012.

Survivors include his 2 sons and daughter-in-law, Donald and Lynn Abernathy of Adairsville and Philip Abernathy of Adairsville; grandchildren, Bonnie Abernathy of Adairsville, Tripp and Katelyn Abernathy of San Diego, CA, and Thomas Abernathy of Adairsville; brothers, Dale Abernathy of Adairsville and Jerry and Pam Abernathy of Prattville, AL; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, June 5, 2014 at 10:00 A.M. at Stoner Chapel Baptist Church with Rev. David Baker and Rev. Dewey Atchley officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. Pallbearers will be Mark Hill, Timmy Garlin, Mark Thornbrough, Wayne Bragg, Rod Herod, and Jeff Barnett. Honorary Pallbearers will be Jimmy Watkins and Luke Leatherwood.

The family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 5:00 PM until 8:00 pm at the Barton Funeral Home.
