Ruth Cann Merkel was the oldest of three children of Samuel Edwin Cann and Sara Jones Cann, of Baltimore, MD. Her younger sister Dorothy was born in 1911, and her younger brother, John, was born in 1924. She met her future husband, Carl Merkel, at a lacrosse game in which he was a player. Her husband became a surgeon, and they raised their family in Saranac Lake, NY. My memory is that Ruth was diagnosed with uterine cancer that had progressed beyond the ability of medicine to treat, and that was her cause of death. Her mother and father are interred in Druid Ridge Cemetery in Baltimore, MD, and the older members of the Cann family are buried in Greenmount Cemetery, also in Baltimore. Her brother John passed away from a brain tumor in 1974, and is interred near Middletown, New Jersy. Her younger sister Dorothy lived to be 96.
