Sir George Williams
Birth: Oct. 11, 1821
Death: Nov. 6, 1905

Social Reformer. Founder of the Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA). Concerned about the spiritual and mental condition of the young men in London, England, he, a 22 year old dry-goods clerk, met with 11 fellow clerks to organize a weekly meeting of prayer and discussion. Decades later, he would earn international acclaim and knighthood from Queen Victoria for the organization that sprang from that first meeting - the YMCA. The first YMCA in North America was started in Montreal, Canada on November 25, 1851. Across the Atlantic, Thomas Valentine Sullivan, a sea captain and missionary, introduced the YMCA to the United States at a meeting in Boston, Massachusetys on December 29, 1851. Rapidly, YMCAs spread across America and garnered a reputation for humanitarian service and remarkable energy.
