Francis Marion Hancock was born in Chester County, South Carolina, to Lewis Hancock and Jane Worthy. He resided in Kodak/Henry's Crossroads in Sevier County, Tennessee. His father, Lewis Hancock, served with him in the same regiment and his grave is confirmed and marked in Nashville National Cemetery.

Francis Marion Hancock is often mistakenly confused with a Francis M. Hancock of the 29th Indiana Infantry buried in Section J, Site 14306, but they are not the same person. Our Francis Marion Hancock died almost a year before the one from Indiana. Based on extensive research and input from local Civil War historians in the Nashville area, our Francis Marion Hancock is believed to be buried in Nashville National Cemetery in an unknown grave. According to the president of the Battlefields of Nashville, "Union soldiers buried in Gallatin were removed to the Nashville National Cemetery in 1866 - 1867. These outlying cemeteries were not too well tended (graves were marked with wooden markers which were subject to deterioration and theft as firewood)." Francis Marion Hancock died at "Hospital No. 19" in Gallatin, TN, according to his service record.
