His first pro win, the Galveston Open in 1923, at age twenty, followed by wins at the Los Angeles Open (1926), Pebble Beach Open (1927), Salt Lake Open (1930), Canadian Open (1932) and Florida West Coast Open (1936) 1937, was his best year, winning the first Vardon Trophy, Los Angeles Open, Canadian Open and True Temper Open. He retired with 36 PGA Tour wins and was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 1992. After competitive golf, he became a well regarded instructor, teaching into his 90s.
