Former Washington County resident James P. Hooyboer, 64, died Nov. 17, 2010, at his family home in Elgin, Texas.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Dec. 18 at the Harold Anderson Visitors Center at Fort Atkinson State Historical Park in Fort Calhoun. Interment will be in the Kelly family plot at Holy Cross Cemetery in Blair. Friends and family will gather afterward at the American Legion in Fort Calhoun.

James "Jim" Peter Hooyboer was born Sept. 1, 1946, in Portland, Ore., to Ralph and Irene Hooyboer.

He graduated from Ganesha High School in Pomona, Calif., in 1964. After high school, he served in the Signal Corps of the U.S. Army. During this time, he served President Lyndon Johnson at the White House and at his Texas ranch. Following his military service, he began a long career with the National Park Service, working at a number of national parks and monuments throughout the United States, including the Johnson Ranch, Forts Larned and Union, Big Thicket, Mammoth Cave, and regional offices in Omaha and Santa Fe, N.M. After 31 years of federal service, he began working with ENCORE. Most recently, he devoted his time to the Down Home Ranch in Elgin, where he worked with individuals with Down Syndrome. His interests included his family, music, the movies and the outdoors.

Through his regional office work and in parks, he touched the lives of many people. He had a plaque on his desk that said, "Affect change every day." His family notes he affected change that will touch generations with his humanity, his humor, and his work to preserve our national treasures.

He is survived by a son, Daniel Hooyboer; two daughters and a son-in-law, Melinda and Brett Ballard and Adrienne Hooyboer; four grandchildren, Christopher Hooyboer, Dianna Hooyboer, Ben Betek and Brittany Ballard; four brothers and sisters-in-law, Ralph and Kit Hooyboer, Dan and Kristi Hooyboer, Bob and Donna Hooyboer, Joe and Daphne Hooyboer; sister, Joan Revis; aunt, Mary Causegroze; numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, and cousins; ex-wife, Wendy Kelly.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Nicholas Hooyboer; in-laws, Daniel and Lorraine Kelly.
