James Carey, 3D, was born in Baltimore and graduated from the Gilman School and Haverford College, and obtained a law degree from the Harvard Law School. During World War I, Carey served as a lietentant in the 29th Division. After the war he studied for a year at the Universite de Poitiers.
In 1930 he became a parter in the firm of Brune, Parker, Carey and Gans. In 1938 he joined Marshall, Carey, and Doub as a partner. He later opened his own law office.
Carey specialized in corporate law and published articles in several law journals. He served as a member of the board of the Title Guarantee Company and of the Carey Machinery and Supply Company founded by his father.
Carey also served as a trustee of the Peale Museum, the Baltimore Museum of Art and the Gilman School and was a member of many clubs and associations. He was instrumental in restoring the Peale Museum during the 1920s. He was also one of the founding members of the 14 West Hamilton Club, which included city luminaries in the literature, medicine, law, and education.
