He was admitted to the bar in 1844, commenced law practice in Columbus, Mississippi and was a member of the State House of Representatives, 1849 to 1851. In 1853, he was elected as a Democrat to the Thirty-third Congress, serving until 1855. He was president of the Mississippi State secession convention in 1861 and was a member of the Provisional Confederate Congress until he resigned to enter the Confederate Army in 1862. During the Civil War, he served as Colonel in command of the 35th Mississippi Infantry. He led the 35th Mississippi in actions at Vicksburg and the Georgia Campaign, until he surrendered his corps at Mobile Alabama, in April 1865. After the war he resumed law practice until his death.
