Japanese Politician. A native of Nagasaki prefecture, Ito had a gift for foreign languages and was sent to Europe by Hirobumi Ito in 1882. Upon his return, he served as the chief of Hirobumi Ito's cabinet. He subsequently served as Minister of Trade and Agriculture in Ito's third cabinet in 1898 and became a member of Emperor Meiji's Privy Council the following year. During this time, he published a pro-government newspaper, the "Tokyo Nichinichi Shimbun." He retained great influence in Japan's governmental affairs into the 1920s.
