Charles Robert Bowers was born June 18, 1921, at Chambersburg, Pennsylvania, the son of John F. Bowers and Hazel Bell Fahnestock Bowers. Mr. Bowers graduated from Chambersburg High School in 1939 and entered the service on October 23, 1942. On June 13, 1943, just prior to the date when he was scheduled to go overseas, the plane in which he was flying collided with another bomber at Conova, South Dakota, and Sergeant Bowers was one of eleven airmen who were killed in the collision. His body was returned to Chambersburg, where funeral services were held on June 18, 1943, his twenty-second birthday. Sgt. Bowers was a member of the First Lutheran Church. He is survived by his father and a 13 year old sister Dorothy.
