SAMUEL S. HOLTON
Samuel S. Holton, an old and well known citizen of Winchester, died Jan. 11, at his home from the effects of heart failure. Mr. Holton was born in Northfield in 1818 [sic]. At the age of 20 he came to Boston and engaged in the retail shoe business on Court Street, occupying one store for 30 years. He moved to Winchester about 50 years ago, where he has since resided. He was identified with the growth and advancement of the town, having held offices of trust and responsibility. He was an active member of the Congregational Church. He had been prominent in the growth of West Medford in the welfare of which he was deeply interested. It was his custom daily to visit his children, three of whom now reside at that place. For some years he had not been actively engaged in business. Funeral at his late residence, 113 Washington Street, Winchester, on Sunday, Jan. 14, at 2 P.M.
----------------
Samuel Holton was one of 14 children (including two sets of twins) born to Luther Holton of Northfield, MA and Betsey Hodges of Grafton, NH. Holton was married four times: the first three marriages were to three Clapp sisters, Elizabeth Jenkins, Tryphena Slade, and Georgianna Doane, before marrying Ellen Elizabeth Freeman (1852-1905) four years before his own death in 1894.
By the 1870s, Holton had invested in a substantial part of the open land between the West Medford railroad depot and the Mystic River. On their marriages, he settled three of his children here: in 1870, Elizabeth J.C. Holton married the builder Moses Mann, who built many of the residences along the newly laid-out streets; in 1873 his son Samuel Slade Holton married a West Medford woman, Laura Ann Fisk, and the young Holton himself went into real estate in Boston and West Medford; and in 1877, Carrie May Holton married Eugene Shepard, later the bursar at Tufts College.
