Eliza Jane was the eldest child of John Cochrane and Selina Curran, born on Amherst Island in Lake Ontario, near Kingston. She immigrated to Chicago in 1866 at the age of four, with her parents and her infant sister Mary.

She married Robert D. Curran on December 4, 1878 in Chicago, and they moved to Kansas City, Kansas in 1882.

She was the mother of five children:

+ Agnes
+ Mary
+ Rachel Irene
+ James Thomas
+ Robert Dewey
